In Pursuit of a Playoff Spot

Written by Karen Maisonneuve.
It’s been a busy week in the Bluewater League for our boys.  The top 4 teams in our league make the playoffs and we are currently in 5th.  Our first game was Tuesday against the league’s undefeated team, The Windsor Junior Spitfires.

Andrew Lachine and Grant Quinlan were there to give us a helping hand.  Our team was missing Brendan Quimby who is on our injured list and we hope will get well soon and return to the ice. Unfortunately, apart from a couple of penalties, we were unable to get on the board at all.  We held them scoreless in the 1st period.  In the 2nd the Spitfires were able to get a couple past our goaltender.  In the 3rd, we were able to hold them to only 1 goal with the game ending 3-0 for Windsor.
Wednesday evening, the Belle River Canadians paid us a visit.  The 1st period was filled with end to end action and our boys were skating well.  Neither team was able to capitalize on their chances so the period ended scoreless.

In the 2nd, Hunter Hendricks was able to slip one into the net during a scramble in the crease.  This one was helped out by Christopher Spidalieri and Jake Maisonneuve.  Before the period was up, the Canadians were able to come up with 2 of their own to end the period up by 1, 2-1.

In the 3rd, we were finding ourselves in the penalty box quite a bit and leaving us vulnerable with only 4 skaters.  During one of those penalties, the Canadians, once again, were able to send one to the back of the net past our screened goalie.   The game ended with a loss of 3-1.

On Thursday evening, we headed down the 401 to play against Chatham in the 1st of 2 games on the road against this team.  It didn’t take long for Josh Hunter to start things off for us.  A pass by Austin Scratch to Noah Fuerth started the play to then have Josh finish it up and put us up by 1.  Jonathan Chippett was on his game as he made some great stops to keep us up.  The period ended 1-0 for us.

In the 2nd, both teams were back and forth up the ice until Chatham managed to score with less than a minute left in the period.  Jake Maisonneuve figured he could top that one with just 24 seconds left, with one of his own, assisted by Dyllon Noakes and Noah Fuerth so the period ended with our team up by one, 2-1.

In the 3rd, the game continued to be a tight match but it was Hunter Hendricks from Noah Fuerth and Calvin Ross that gave us the insurance goal and a 3-1 win to bring us 2 points closer to 4th place.

On Saturday, it was back up the 401 for the 2nd game against Chatham.  It wasn’t until there were 6 seconds left in the 1st, that Hunter Hendricks was able to start things off for us with a goal, assisted by Christopher Spidalieri and Austin Scratch.

In the 2nd, the puck was all over the ice and Kam Quinlan was making terrific saves in net to keep us out of trouble.  Finally, near the end of the 2nd period, Dyllon Noakes put a short-handed one past the goalie, helped out by Grant Quinlan and Calvin Ross.

Mid-way through the 3rd, it was Noah Fuerth on a setup by Hunter Hendricks and Jake Maisonneuve that gave us another reason to breath easy by putting us up by 3, 3-0.  The 3rd saw us get into some penalty trouble with 2 men in the box at the same time but we managed to kill off both penalties with no damage done.  The game ended giving us another 2 points on our quest to make the playoffs.  Congratulations to Kam Quinlan on his shutout.

Next week we play our final 3 league games in the hopes of securing a playoff spot.  Go Ravens!
