FAQ’s about the Partnership agreement between Essex and Southpoint
Q: Will it be a Southpoint or an Essex team?
A: The plan is to create a new center name, colours and logo. Essex and Southpoint will still exist, but each will offer local league and IP Hockey only.
Q: How will coaches be selected?
A: A coaches selection committee will consist of two members from each of the board of directors and a fifth person who is unassociated with either center. After the selection process the selected candidates will be brought back to the board as the recommendation and the board will make the final approval.
Q: how are we going to be able to know that players will be given a fair opportunity to make these rosters?
A: The committee is looking in the best options for this as we believe that each player deserves a fair and unbiased opportunity to make the roster. Just like the coaching selection we are looking into the use of an independent person/group to rank the players.
Q: Will the registration fees be increased?
A: Essex and Southpoint registration rates were very close to being on par already. The cost may rise marginally depending on ice rates, inflation or increased amount of ice purchased and the impact to the 2021-2022 season still being worked on from Hockey Canada, OHF and the OMHA.
Q: Will local/house league players have to drive to the opposite Centre arena for practice.
A: NO! All local league players will continue to practice and play home games out of their home arena wearing their prospective home center jerseys.
Q: How is it decided who plays at which arena?
A: The new hockey board will make every attempt to share arenas as much as possible. Likely each team will have one practice in Southpoint and one in Essex per week and the games will be played on a rotational basis between arenas.
Q: Will there be less opportunity for my child to make a travel team?
A: NO! This partnership will lead to more players playing travel hockey at a level suitable for their skills. On our own, neither center could support a major, minor, and AE team at every age division. Under the now expired shared boundary agreement we were able to ice an AE team in every division.
